Birmingham is well known for its great Indian food and soho road is a great place to explore for some inexpensive quality treats. I enjoy Punjabi street food while in Punjab and it is one of my favourites. This naturally means I have cravings for something that tastes genuine. Nakoder on soho road is a great example of vegetarian Punjabi street food. Although advertised as being a sweet centre it is also a restaurant.

If your looking for a fine dining experience, with formal pleasantries and ambience ... this isn't the place. What you do get is a rather authentic Punjabi restaurant experience.

Here I ordered somosa chaat, which is a chickpea curry over a couple of somosas. It's a filling dish due to the fried somosas and the chickpeas. If your not into your chilli foods I recommend asking for some yogurt which they will happily provide for free. This is a great addition to the dish whether you are using it for cooling or not. The other dish is my personal favourite 'Gol Gappa'. This is thin crispy balls which you poke holes in and then fill with some chickpea and potato mixture. One full you add the brown chutney. The chutney is slightly sweet with a lot of different spices. Those three elements together create something special rich in flavour and texture. This is probably the most popular street food dish in Punjab and rightfully so! The other small bites are vegetarian kebabs and allo tikki. The allo tikki is fright potato, a little bit like mash potato but with a crispy shell. All in all, including drinks this all cost about £12 and was more than enough for two people. So if your after something different yet authentic check out soho road and nakoder sweet centre.

I was surprised to see the new board up at this sweet centre because it was previously Quality Sweet Centre and has been for decades! Despite recently changing ownership, they had maintained the name - until now!

This revamped sweet centre is under new management but still serves pure vegetarian Indian cuisine. They specialise in Indian sweets with many other snacks available such as samosas (which you can purchase both fried and un-fried), mixed pakora and chaat.

They are surrounded with competition so I think it will take some time for them to become recognised because they are so new.

Generally, I was impressed with the warm service and clean look of the shop front. They also cater for personal events and functions. Their prices are around average for the area. If you're lucky you'll get parking immediately outside on the main road, although there is a car park on Waverhill Road.
